Antarctica and the Arctic

Antarctica

  • 14.0 million km2 in land mass
  • Fifth largest continent
  • It contains the geographic South Pole
  • -89oC is the coldest temperature
  • Nearly twice as big as Australia
  • 49 countries signed the Antarctic Treaty, which protects the ecozone and forbids other activities
  •  There are research stations on Antarctica
  • Roald Amundsen was the first person to reach the South Pole

If you don't know what an ecozone is you can find out here

Arctic

  • Arctic region is the northern most point on earth
  • Comes from Greek word, ἄρκτος (arktos) which means bear
  • -68oC is the coldest temperature
  • Global warming is causing the sea ice to get smaller
  • Arctic Council is made up of the USA, Finland, Iceland, Denmark (Greenland and the Faroe Islands), Canada, Russia, Norway, and Sweden, who mostly look after environmental issues, not boundary issues
  • Polar bears are found in the Arctic, but not in the Antarctic where penguins are found
  • No country owns the North Pole or the ocean around it

Chipping up wood

On  Saturday my dad used a wood chipper to chip up wood. He got a size 8 for a size 6 price because they gave the size 6 to somebody else. He had all ready cut the hedge down so he didn't need to on the day. He cut 3m off the top and 1m off the side of our back hedge.
